Maybe you could make a day/night sequence in which a certain race/unit is made stronger or weaker depending on the
in-game time. Time could be passed by the ending of turns.

Yes, I agree. I think it is a very cool idea. But you would definitely want to be able to start some games as 'standard', especially for newbies.

No battle plan survives contact with the enemy...
