What do the white/gold stars under your avatar actually mean?

I have 5 gold which I assume is good because so does TheDragon and other regulars of the forum.

A hover message would be a nice addition.

See you can rate people with the rate button. The white stars means you haven't been rated yet. You can rate someone from 5 stars to 1. I gave you 4 stars right now just so you could see

it's a reputation system

If folks use it properly then it's a good rating on who gives good advice and such. If abused as a popularity contest then it's just meaningless info.
