Currently in the main lobby, when you have a message in a game you get a grey/white envelope appear on the entry for that game. However you can't tell if it's a system message i.e. something you can ignore, or from a player which you might want to reply to.
I'd suggest that games that only have system messages appear as grey envelopes, whereas any messages from players appear white possibly outlined in blue.
For bonus kudos, when a list is collapsed show the mail icon there too with the number of games with messages.
