Occasionally there are yellow carets or chevrons to the upper left of a unit icon. Sometimes there are numbers below them too. What do these mean?

yellow chevrons are when your unit "levels up". this sometimes happens when a weak unit kills a strong one or a strong unit kills many units. for every chevron the unit's max health is increased by 1. so one chevron = 11 max health
the numbers underneath are enemy buried underling adjacent to your unit

the yellow chevrons indicate "experience". after a certain number of rounds that your unit has been alive your max health is increased by 1, and consequently your max damage ability.
i've never had more than one or two units with chevrons during a match, and matches don't usually last long enough for them to be any major factor in the outcome.
re the number underneath your unit, it indicates how many buried underlings are around that unit. however, this number won't appear until the next round when you create a new unit and there are buried underlings around your base.
