First off my qualifications for review:
- I love the game
- As a game author I was awarded: Best Strategy Game, MacWorld Game Hall of Fame 1991
A little disclosure:
Prior to reviewing the formula I disliked the random factors.
My conclusion:
The formula is excellent and the random factors are wonderful.
Here's why:
The author's of the formula had little choice for the formula after they decided to factor in as many elements as they did. These are elements such as attack strength, defense strength, gang up, health, and randomness. The formula simply achieves their obvious design goals.
My initial dislike of the randomness I now attribute to the bug in the currently released version. The bug exaggerated the randomness.
As designed, the randomness is very minor and can occasionally be exceptional. What this randomness does, is it transforms UniWar from a chess like game into a simulation. In real battles, there are unexpected and uncontrollable out comes. The randomness in the formula brings those factors into the game.
One player complained that he didn't like his game being determined by luck as often a battle is won by a single critical strike. And, at the time I agreed. Now, seeing how minor the randomness is designed to be, I have a new outlook.
The new outlook is: a skillful player will take random factors into an account and not play so close to the edge. That is, they will work to neutralize and balance the random factors. Very occasionally, the random factors may change the fate of the most skillful player. But, that is the nature of war. Which is the very experience I believe the author's are trying to bring to the game.
To the authors:
Great job!

What are your reasons for not surrendering when their is no hope of winning?
Is it poor sportsmanship to prolong the inevitable?
|
|
The damage formula is current a mystery, but should it be?
|
|
The problem happens in the game: FULLPLANE40451
Confirmed on:
iPod touch 1G w/ iPhoneOS 3.0
iPod touch 2G w/ iPhoneOS 3.1.1
iPhone 3GS w/ iPhoneOS 3.1.1
In particular, the first removed player can not be directly selected. Selecting the next player, selects the removed player. Selecting the next player, selects the previous player. Selecting the last player, selects no one.
The problem occurs in both portrait and landscape modes.

Perhaps, the anonymous poster is not remembering I'm talking about team games?
I'm pretty certain I remember needing to capture all bases, even when all enemy pieces were destroyed in 8 player, team games.
|
|
I don't remember the exact particulars, but because it was a source of unnecessary irritation that took days to resolve, I know there is a problem.
What if the the remaining pieces belong to Surrendered or Removed players and the remaining players have their bases covered and not captured?
It's silly to debate this. The developers should respond if they want to show feedback is clearly appreciated and not ignored.
Additionally, they should make quick reply not say Anonymous if the poster is logged in.

Capturing all enemy bases should be unnecessary to end a team game. Covering all enemy bases should be sufficient. Especially, if the enemy has no units.

If you use multiple devices to access your games, messages do not show up on all devices.

When a teammate has surrendered: As per normal you can not attack them and you can convert them. This is especially frustrating if they are on a base.
|
|
In a team game, selecting a teammate's base reports: "You can capture this base."
You can not capture a teammates base. Either the message is wrong, or capturing should be allowed.
It would be great to be able to capture a teammate's base.
|
|
Selecting a player is war reports is unreliable.
At the very least, it seems to be broken when in a non-team game. Probably it is related to some players having 2 lines as normal and 3 lines as out Surrendered or Removed.
|
|
When you create a new unit, buried units are not indicated until you exit and renter the game.

Same problem: FULLPANE87412

What good would reporting anyone do? Creating accounts is trivial.
It would be nice if you could add players to an automatic ban list for your future games.
Ban players would not be able to join games you are in. And you would not see games they are in when looking at the open games list.
