One big factor is your rank in relationship to your foes rank. If someone ranked below you defeats you, you may lose twenty some odd points. In a similar manner, if you defeat someone who is ranked significantly below you, then you gain few points.

Boy, do I feel dumb...that's what happens when you get pummeled in several games in a row.....I apologize for crying foul so quickly.

I wish I had taken a screen image, or ran the replay. I never use the replay. I never think of it. I did not notice his underling there until I had moved one underling and attacked him with it. Im going to set up the same scenario on a game with a bot, and see if I, as the player moving first, could have made it to this hex in one move. I have to assume all the units begin in the same location a the the beginning of each game. I will post a pic of the board before any move is made.
