It'd be quite helpful to be able to disband units, even without refund. I made a stupid purchase and blocked my base with it, hardly seems like a feature. ;-)

I don't like that idea. You can often really stuff up the enemy by grinding his units down few hit points but not killing them.
This would remove that ability.
Hence just treat the silly build as once off - I did it once or twice before I learned better.

I feel very strongly that you should not be able to disband your own units.
Part of the games strategy is using the opponents units to block his army.
But, the developers must add a way to get rid of the units of a team member that has been defeated or has surrendered.

Disbanding could be limited to your own cities, just to remedy a build mistake. Would still like to see it, as you can tell... ;-)
