Khraleans » Counter to another Kral spamming Garudas » Go to message
KvK is notoriously monotonous. The main choice usually is what mix of Garuda and Swarmers. Depends a bit on map, base proximity, credit levels, positioning etc. (the more proximity, the lower credits, the harder to build a good swarm, I think.) It is possible to beat Garuda spam with Swarmer spam, and on many maps it is likely that swarmer spam will win.

Hey folks, some bad news sort of. Got back from a business trip to Dublin a bit thrashed from lack of sleep and jet lag. Tournament started against josborne, got 1 move in yesterday but then had a packed evening, and got so exhausted at night I wasn't up for making moves. Up and down a bit at night but the good news is I slept in until late in the morning (insomniacs in the crowd will understand). The bad news is when I got up, picked up uniwar first thing but my moves were literally down to 1-3 minutes left. I had the game open but so did josborne, and literally at the instant it counted down he skipped on each map. The beach map has sharp openings and I'm not interested in trying to win with skipped moves, so I've surrendered.

So josborne advances in round 3, 4-0.

Um, matches were well monitored and I wish him luck on what I'm sure will be a continuing, attentive tournament run.

Sorry, I see now that quanras said that.
General Discussion » A question on buried units » Go to message
If you try to move a buried unit to a space occupied by another buried unit, the game will give you a message that the space is occupied by another buried unit. So each buried unit can test all of the hexes it can move to (by trying to move and canceling the move either way).

where/when can we see what teams have registered? (that may help players figure out who is not yet enrolled in the tournament.)
What's New in the Latest Updates » Rank Reform » Go to message
The post says "creating a ranked game with random opponent will mark a player as active" implying continuing to play a game is not enough. Hence my comment on 10 days being too short. But good to get that clarified.

One other comment: the last few times I've tried, the system says "There is no match available at this time." Naturally, it will be a pain if people lose points because the system can't find a match for them.

Glad to hear it, this should shake up tired ranked play a lot. thanks xavi!

It seems that tournaments are using ranking for seeding as well, which is good as it gives some incentive to maintain ratings. There are a lot of very good players walking around with low scores because they don't feel like playing ranked.

feedback:

* 10 days seems pretty short to start imposing big penalties. Even 30 days for an inactive penalty would be a nice improvement over the permanent nature of current scores. I commonly take a couple of weeks off uniwar now and then. If such a break means a score reset, it may unfortunately discourage some people returning to the game (thinking their rating is ancient history anyway).

* Unfortunately independently scored mirror matches don't help much, there will still be a frustrating lottery aspect to this based on map, where it can take 10 hard fought wins to overcome one random bad assignment. A 2700 vs. 2400 player getting assigned a badly unbalanced matchup will mean 50 points (or whatever the max is) loss for the 2700 player, who then gets back 1-2 points for the mirror match (or whatever). This may sound like griping but I think psychologically it just gets tiring/less fun and many people don't bother after awhile, probably the main reason for score stagnation. (Perhaps they'll keep at it now with new policy, but maybe they'll just not want to play random ranked because it's easier to be a proud "I only play unranked and you don't know how good I am" type player, of which there are already many.)

* I still think the ideal system will apply data to determine more appropriate points to award for matches based on past performance of given races on a particular map (in roughly the score tier of the given players). In other words, if RankedMapA shows such-and-such high % of khral wins against titans, it would award correspondingly reduced points for a khral victory and enhanced points for a titan victory. But that's obviously extra data storage, coding etc.

* In tourneys the 'match' is defined by who wins in fewer rounds. That would be a great way to resolve split wins. If that is too complex for now, maybe a scoring modification would be appropriate for now: when split wins and the same race won, the points at stake are lowered, or some such.

thanks for soliciting feedback and continuing the improvements!

plague: in practice this matters for helis, who refuse medical treatment and continue to bash helpless swarmers and underlings, and deserve to crash and burn when the plague reaches its final stage. they are easily moved away from stuff by the time they are at 1, the question is whether they make it back to an engineer or not. they shouldn't. not really a huge deal for gameplay or balance though.

transforming: it's an understandable concern, but given where race balance is competitively, that might actually be a reason to make the change, not to resist it. We are a long way from titans losing too easily to sapiens (in games where Titans are threatening base captures), or from khraleans losing too easily to titans(!) There's not really a problem with sap losing too easily to khral either. In all those cases, the larger trend is the reverse and so making the capture ability stronger might be tempting, but it's a bit of a niche thing that doesn't substantially affect balance generally, and I'd stick with the logic I expressed earlier about overall gameplay sharpness.

IMO.

cheers

Im pretty sure that full automation after tourney starts will be a possibility in the future - if the uniwar gods want to ...and with sufficient praise and worship from the loyal uniwar-followers

*Heaps praise and worship*

Thank you Xavi, uniwar god of the Cosmic Server!

When i test this map i won as sap as khral

I dont want to say that it is very balanced combination, but it is quite successful

as Titan vs. Sap?

Anyway, that's what will make those kind of stats interesting.

This tourney is so fancy... auto-generated games. Pretty soon the results will be auto-reported, and the live bracket will include links to the recordings of each games that you can watch in playback mode... and, and...

May be counter-intuitive, but for gameplay reasons I like captures having that priority, adds urgency and sharpness to the 'checkmate' threats. The game already promotes a lot of defensive options, and so I think elements that increase the power and urgency of cap threats help it move faster.

Your base necessarily includes electromagnetic shielding as part of its design, you have to stop the mechas before they walk inside, plug your systems into the Titan mainframe and download terabytes of robot porn Bender style.

Talone, I enjoy seeing statistics from tournaments, for example in a given round, what proportion of sap-khral games is won by sap? (Obviously these stats get more interesting relative to race balance on the map as you get into later rounds and higher caliber of play on both sides.) Do you calculate these sorts of statistics? If not maybe I can figure out how to mine your spreadsheet and do the calculations (I assume you are recording this, though from the format of the spreadsheet it wasn't obvious you could tell what the race assignments were in different matches.) Just a thought/suggestion. Thanks again for organizing these events for the community, the bracket page is cool.

I will say that for a tournament advertised as a beach party, I feel like I'm spending a fair bit of time mucking about in swamps. Should've brought mosquito repellant in addition to suntan lotion. Also, maybe it is the tropical humidity but this island does not seem super hospitable to mechanical species in general.

so have mine. I would've marked in the spreadsheet but it's locked.
